When someone asks ChatGPT 'best CRM for solo consultants,' the answer often comes with two or three links underneath. Those are citations. Each one is a click you didn't have to pay for.
Citation presence is the share of relevant queries in your industry where your domain shows up as a source. Today, most sites have zero. Even single-digit presence is competitive.
Step 1: Find the queries
- 01Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude side by side.
- 02Brainstorm 20 questions a real customer might ask before buying what you sell.
- 03Run each query in each assistant. Note which domains get cited.
- 04Patterns will jump out: a few competitors dominate, a few independent guides keep showing up, and your site is missing.
Step 2: Make pages that get picked
Cited pages share a profile. They answer the question in the first paragraph. They use real subheadings. They include specifics — numbers, brand names, dates. They feel like a knowledgeable friend, not a press release.
- 01Open with a one-paragraph direct answer. No throat-clearing.
- 02Use H2s that read like questions a human would ask.
- 03Include comparison tables and lists. Assistants extract these cleanly.
- 04Cite your sources inline with real links. Assistants follow them.
- 05Add a 'Last updated' date and keep it honest.

Step 3: Monitor and adjust
Rerun your query list monthly. Track which pages of yours got cited and which didn't. Update the losers — usually it's the opening paragraph or a missing comparison.

How often do AI assistants refresh their citations?
Live-browsing tools (Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, Claude with web access) refresh on every query. Cached or training-based answers refresh on the model's update cycle, which can be months.
Does getting cited drive traffic?
Yes, but less per query than a top-three Google result. The bigger win is presence — being in the answer when your competitor isn't.
Can I pay to be cited?
No. There's no ad slot. Citation is earned by being the most useful, most clearly written source on the question.
