tl;dr
Keyword position tells you where you sit on a page of ten blue links. A growing share of searches never reach that page, because an AI-generated answer sits above it or replaces it entirely. Ahrefs and Semrush are still the right tools for rankings and backlinks. They aren't built to tell you whether ChatGPT or Perplexity would name you as the answer. That's a separate measurement, and it needs a separate number: citation share.
The shift away from ten blue links
Rank tracking was built for a search results page that hasn't existed, in its pure form, for a while. Google added featured snippets, then People Also Ask, then knowledge panels, each one chipping away at the assumption that a "#1 ranking" gets a click. AI Overviews are the biggest chip yet. When Google generates a synthesized answer at the top of the page, a meaningful share of searchers read it and leave. The link underneath, even at position one, becomes optional reading.
The same shift is happening one layer up, off Google entirely. People ask ChatGPT to recommend a tool, ask Perplexity to compare two vendors, ask Claude to summarize a category. None of that traffic touches a SERP. There's no keyword position to track, because there's no ranked list. There's just an answer, and either your brand is in it or it isn't.
Neither of these trends means keyword rankings stopped mattering. Being crawled, indexed, and ranked is still how most of the open web (and a lot of AI training and retrieval data) gets built in the first place. It means rankings stopped being the full picture.
The visibility gap: ranking #1 vs. being the source the model quotes
These are correlated, not identical. A page can rank #1 on Google and never get quoted by an assistant, usually because it's written for search engines rather than extraction: long intros, no direct answer near the top, no clean structure for a model to lift a paragraph from. A page can also get quoted constantly by ChatGPT while sitting on page two of Google, because it happens to answer a specific question in a way that's easy to paraphrase, and other sites link to or mention it as the reference.
The gap matters commercially because a citation carries more trust than a ranked link. When an assistant names your product directly in an answer, that's closer to a recommendation than a search result is. It also means the two failure modes look completely different from the outside: you can have healthy rankings and be functionally invisible to AI search, and nobody watching a rank tracker would notice.
What InvisibleRank actually measures
Our audit doesn't guess at citation share from vibes. It runs checks across three pillars and reports where each one is weak:
- Crawler access and structure: whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended are actually allowed in robots.txt, whether your content exists in raw HTML or only appears after JavaScript runs, whether pages load fast enough to get crawled deeply, and whether structured data (Organization, FAQPage) tells a machine what a page is instead of leaving it to guess.
- Citation presence and content depth: whether AI assistants currently name you when we test a set of realistic buyer questions in your category, whether your pages are formatted so a model can extract a clean answer (question-shaped headings, a direct answer up top), and whether your content is deep enough on your highest-intent topics to be the thing that gets quoted instead of a competitor's page.
- Entity and authority signals: Google Business Profile completeness, review volume, NAP (name/address/phone) consistency across the web, backlink strength, and whether independent sources (forums, roundups, other people's content) mention you at all. These are the same signals a model leans on when it's deciding which brand to trust enough to name.
What we don't measure: long-run keyword rank history and full backlink-gap analysis. Ahrefs and Semrush already do those well. We built this audit to answer the question those tools weren't designed for.
Where Ahrefs and Semrush still win, and where they stop short
Neither tool is obsolete, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Ahrefs has the largest independent backlink index on the market and a rank tracker that's been refined for over a decade. Semrush covers keyword research, competitive gap analysis, and increasingly, its own AI Overview and AI toolkit features. If you need to know why a competitor outranks you on Google, both are still the right call.

Realistically, most SaaS marketing teams end up running both kinds of tooling side by side, the same way they'd run a rank tracker and an uptime monitor. Different questions, different tools.
How to track answer-engine attribution today
There's no official "AI Search Console" from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google yet, so attribution today is stitched together from a few sources:
- GA4 referral segments. Build a segment for traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, and copilot.microsoft.com. It'll undercount (a lot of AI-assisted research never results in a click at all), but the trend line is real signal.
- Server log user-agent analysis. Pull your raw access logs and filter for GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended. This tells you whether the crawlers are visiting at all, which pages they hit, and whether they're getting blocked or rate-limited, before you even get to the question of whether they cite you.
- Prompt-set monitoring. Pick 10 to 20 prompts a real buyer would type, run them on a schedule across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude, and log whether you're named and whether a competitor replaced you. What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO optimizes a page to rank in a list of ten links. GEO (generative engine optimization) optimizes a page to be the one paragraph an AI assistant pulls into its answer. The technical overlap is real (clean HTML, schema, real backlinks), but the target is different: a ranking is a position, a citation is an inclusion.
Do traditional rank trackers see AI Overviews?
Ahrefs and Semrush have both added AI Overview detection to their rank tracking, and it's useful for a rough read on how often AI Overviews appear for your keyword list. What it doesn't do is tell you whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude would cite you for a question that never shows up in your keyword list in the first place, because those tools are still built around a list of keywords, not a list of prompts.
How is AI visibility calculated?
There's no single industry-standard formula yet, the way there is for Domain Rating. Our audit scores it as a composite: whether AI crawlers can access and read your site, whether your pages are structured so a model can extract an answer, whether you're actually getting cited across a set of realistic buyer prompts, and whether the entity signals (reviews, mentions, consistent business details) back up that citation. Weight those wrong and you get a score that looks good but doesn't predict real citations.
Why did my traffic drop while my rankings stayed the same?
Because the click used to happen below your ranking, and now it doesn't happen at all. Someone searches, Google (or Bing, inside Copilot) shows an AI-generated answer above the results, and the searcher gets what they need without clicking through, even to the #1 result. Your rank tracker still shows #1. Your analytics shows fewer sessions. Both are telling the truth about different things.
Can I track citations across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini?
Yes, with some manual work or a monitoring tool. The manual version: write down 10-20 prompts a buyer would actually type, run them weekly in each assistant, and log whether you're mentioned and whether a competitor is instead.
